Life can change in an instant. This is something I had the “pleasure” of learning as a child. I always try to find the positive side to everything so even though the lesson was learned in a completely shitty way, it was a lesson learned none-the-less. It is one that has helped me many times throughout my life and proves to come in handy over and over again.
For those of you who haven’t experienced a deviation from the norm before, I’m guessing at this point, you’re knee deep in a topsy turvy bizarro version of what used to be your average, everyday routine.
Maybe you’re working, but now it’s from home. You might have kids who used to leave the house and receive care and education from someone qualified for the job. You used to have a schedule. You used to run out and grab something forgotten on your grocery list. You used to have Friday night dinner and drinks with friends. You used to go away for Spring Break.
SURPRISE, BITCH. THINGS CHANGE.
I say ‘used to’ because our old normal seems like a distant memory even though it was only weeks ago. I say ‘things change’ because they do. I say ‘surprise, bitch’ because it makes me smile so don’t worry about that one.
No matter how hard you try to stay on track, sometimes life gets in the way. Sometimes it’s a little hiccup. Sometimes the entire world is turned upside down. There are some things you just can’t plan for and this is big fat lesson in how to adjust to situations beyond your control.
There are many people who truly have a hard time deviating from their plans and routines. I know this is stressing them out in a way many of us can’t comprehend. We’re all stressed. We’re all freaked out in some way. Some people are better at managing these changes than others. I am proud to be one of those people.
Guys, I got in a car one afternoon and minutes later I couldn’t walk anymore. I couldn’t feel my legs. My entire existence and everything I knew was no more. Because of that, I like to consider myself an expert at dealing with some fucked up shit on the fly. It’s not that I’m not struggling with this whole pandemic like the best of them, I just have a knack for focusing on the long term and the solutions as opposed to the past and its problems. It took years of practice to become that way but I’m pretty damn good at it.
There are obstacles that we can navigate our way around. Sometimes we have options and sometimes we really just don’t, but there is one decision we always have control over and that is HOW WE DEAL WITH THE SITUATION AT HAND. That time is now.
We are quite literally, all in this together. We are all navigating through the unknown. We are all afraid. We are all confused. You are not alone. The only difference is how we choose to view our own current status and how we decide to proceed.
Choose to do what makes YOU happy. Choose to arrange your time in a way that suits YOU. Choose to run your household the way that works FOR NOW. Choose to parent your children in a way that allows them to thrive at the moment. Choose to see this time as getting closer to the end every day instead of getting longer. Choose to do whatever you can do to get you to other side of this crazy situation.
We are one day closer to the end. You can do it. #covid #stayhome #staystrong #behappy #choosehappy
